For my 26th birthday, send money to people living in extreme poverty

I believe that we should maximize the good that we can create in the world. I am strongly motivated by doing good that is effective, evidence-based, and high-impact. The idea is that we can do more good in the world if we donate, say, $10 to a highly effective charity, than an equivalent (or multiplied) amount to a typical charity.

For instance, donating $10 to people in extreme poverty in low-income countries (where in most cases, the poverty line is $2.15), can sustain 1 person for a bit more than 4 days. Or, 4 persons comfortably for a day. Donating the same amount to charity in highly-developed countries will, at most, help pay a single meal for 1 person.

This principle of efficiency is ubiquitous in our purchasing decisions. Shopping around, we always look for the biggest bang for our buck. Why not do the same with donations? If this is something that does not speak to you, that's also ok, if you were thinking of giving me something for my birthday, I would greatly appreciate it if you could donate the money one of the two charities I have selected.

I hope to use this fundraiser as an opportunity to a) raise funds for causes that I'm convinced (by objective, sound, scientific evidence) can generate maximum positive value per unit of money donated, and b) raise awareness about this kind of thinking.

In case anyone is interested in the hard science, I can happily provide a list of a few prominent, highly influential, peer-reviewed journal articles that have evidenced the positive impact of direct, unconditional cash transfers to people in poverty.

In case you were wondering, no, they do not spend it on drugs or drinking!
